What Sulfites Are:

Sulfites are the general name for six specific substances:

  • Sulfur Dioxide
  • Sodium Sulfite
  • Sodium Bisulfite
  • Sodium Metabisulfite
  • Potassium Bisulfite
  • Potassium Metabisulfite

Sulfites are common additives in many foods and drinks.  Sulfites are added to foods to prevent spoilage and as a preservative, and are also added to wines, beers, fruits, vegetables, medications, and seafood to stop them from discoloring. Unfortunately, 5-10% of people are susceptible to allergic reactions due to sulfite containing foods and drinks. Also, 10-15% of people with asthma are also susceptible to allergic reactions due to sulfite containing foods and drinks.  

Symptoms of Sulfites:

  • Hives
  • Nausea
  • Gastritis
  • Puffiness in Face/Eyes
  • Water Retention/Bloating
  • Coughing
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Sneezing
  • Runny Nose
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Constipation

  • Anaplylactic Shock
