Sulfites are common additives in many foods and drinks.  Sulfites are added to foods to prevent spoilage and as a preservative, and are also added to wines, beers, fruits, vegetables, medications, and seafood to stop them from discoloring. Unfortunately, 5-10% of people are susceptible to allergic reactions due to sulfite containing foods and drinks. Also, 10-15% of people with asthma are also susceptible to allergic reactions due to sulfite containing foods and drinks.

SulfiteCheck™ Description

The SulfiteCheck™ Detector is a small and easily concealed detector which allows the user to rapidly detect if sulfites are present in food and drinks.  This detector comes equipped with a builit in Qualtiy Assurance that lets the user know if the detector is working properly.

Sensitivity: As low as 5 parts per million.

How to Test:

Preparing Solid Foods:   First mince the food and place it in a seperate container.  To the container, add an equal volume of water and mix well.

Preparing Liquids: Use as-is.

Testing using the SulfiteCheck™ Detectors:

  1. Prepare your sample as described above.
  2. Carefully pour a small amount of liquid, or, place a few drops of sample on the holes on BOTH sides of the SulfiteCheck™ Detector and wait three minutes.
  3. A blue color will form on the “Quality Assurance” side of the SulfiteCheck™ Detector to indicate that the detectors are working properly.
  4. A white color will form on the “Sample” side of the SulfiteCheck™ Detector if the sample contains sulfites.  If blue color appears throughout, then no sulfites are present.

What Are Sulfites?

Sulfites are the general name for six specific substances:

  • Sulfur Dioxide
  • Sodium Sulfite
  • Sodium Bisulfite
  • Sodium Metabisulfite
  • Potassium Bisulfite
  • Potassium Metabisulfite
